Whether on a guided walk, with a guide book or a Hadrian's Wall O.S. map in hand; one thing is for sure, you are in for some breathtaking scenery, and a march steeped in history. As well as the spectacular views, you are likely to pass standing stones dating back 2000 years, Roman milestones, roads and forts.
The one walk i would recommend above the rest would be the Howesteads Fort to Steel Rig trail - allow 3 hours. This walk follows the wall along the top of crags, dipping up and over the flowing hills, and passes the unmistakable tree in the dip, featured in "Robin Hood Prince of Thieves". You are very much out in the open, so warm clothes, walking boots and water proofs are highly recommended. The opening of the Hadrian's Wall National trail in 2003 will provide visitors to the area with even more choice. For full details on walks around Hadrian's Wall either pick up a leaflet from the local Tourist Information centre, or booklets/leaflets can be ordered by ringing any of the following numbers:

The combination of water and forest gives Kielder a beautiful environment for walkers to enjoy. There are many way marked tracks and forest trails suitable for all visitors. For the more adventurous the dam has a 27 mile shoreline challenge. Alternatively you can catch the ferry to the desolate North shore and start your treck from there. A comprehensive walking guide along with other walks leaflets are available at the main visitor centres at Kielder.

Local Area Details

Belligham is a small and peaceful village nestled in the bottom of the North Tyne Valley. Situated on the Pennine Way it offers many picturesque local walks and is an ideal base when visiting local attractions such as Hadrian's Wall, Kielder water and forest, Northumberland's stately homes, castles, coastline and much more...
Bellinghams most popular walk Hareshaw Linn is a round trip of 3 miles and is ideal for all ages, shapes and sizes. You will follow a burn upwards, passing over mounds made of spoil from the ovens of an old iron works. Crossing the burn on several occasions enclosed in woodland in this minute valley, eventually reaching the waterfall as pictured above.
This walk changes appearance with the seasons, and I would recommend either a dawn or dusk journey if you wish to see more of the varied local wildlife, including deer, badgers, stotes, dippers etc.

A ten minute drive takes you to the car park at Sidwood another one of my favourite local walks starts from here. You may either walk along Tarset Burn and up through the mossy unspoilt wood - a one hour round trip. Alternatively you may follow the border trail, which takes you past 5 ruined bastles, which were fortified farm houses, occupied at the time of the Border Rievers - a 2 hour round trip.

The Village has a county standard 18 hole golf course and sits on the banks of England's premier salmon and sea trout river The North Tyne. (FREE fishing when staying at West View)

Other activities include Horse riding, Shooting, mountain biking (special discounts from West View), Tank driving, quad biking, hot air ballooning, archery, bird watching etc etc....

For further details on tourist attractions and activities ask when booking or call Bellingham Tourist Office on 01434 220616.
