Local Area DetailsCrail is the most picturesque of the string of small fishing villages and harbours nestling along the East Neuk of Fife, its houses with traditional crow-stepped gables and pantile roofs crowding down to its harbour. The village offers excellent local amenities and the area is renowned for its coastal walks, quiet beaches and numerous golf-courses - Kingsbarns is only three miles away and St Andrews is only 20 minutes drive. A survey by Country Life Magazine of the "best places in Britain to live" placed the fishing village of Crail in fifth place - and the only place in Scotland to make the top ten.FISHING VILLAGES & BEACHES: As well as in Crail itself, picturesque harbours and/or clean, safe beaches can be found in Pittenweem, St Monans, Elie, Kingsbarns, St Andrews, Lower Largo and Anstruther, the last with it's well-renowned fish & chip shop. GOLF: there are over 30 golf courses in the Kingdom of Fife, some of the most notable being within a few miles of Crail, including St Andrews, Kingsbarns, Ladybank, Elie, Leven, Scoonie, Charlestown and of course Crail Golfing Society's two excellent links courses. CYCLING: Fife has one of the UK's most comprehensive cycle networks. Explore 300 miles (500km) of cycle route along quiet country lanes, disused railway lines and forest tracks as well as commuter routes in towns. HISTORY: Fife has a long and rich heritage with many attractions dating throughout the ages; from prehistoric standing stones and Celtic long barrows through medieval castles and cathedrals to a 20th century "Secret Bunker". ART & PHOTOGRAPHY: breathtaking sea views, ancient harbours, sandy beaches and rocky coves, open countryside and wooded glades, pretty villages, palaces and castles furnished and in ruins, doo'cots (dovecots) standing lonely in fields, lochs & laws, a wide variety of flora and fauna - all inspire the creative muses and attract artists, photographers, writers and poets to this most delightful corner of one of the most beautiful countries in the world. NATURE: Fife Ness Muir is an important nature reserve where over 150 species of birds have been recorded, including numbers of migrating birds going to or from 14 European countries. Other birdwatching sites in Fife include Kilconquar Loch, Largo Bay, the Eden Estuary & Tentsmuir Forest, St Andrews Bay and the May Island which has been a nature reserve since 1956, with a large grey seal colony and populations of nesting and migrating seabirds including puffins, shags, guillemots, razorbills and kittiwakes. Boat trips are available from Anstruther Harbour during summer months.
