Local Area DetailsFuerteventura is a balm for the tired spirit. The miles and miles of golden sands in Jandía, the clear blue sea, the cloudless open horizons only broken by the occasional palm-tree or broom bush around a tiny hamlet: everything is designed to relax the wearied soul. Nothing further removed from the constant bustle of everyday life than to stroll along the beach, dragging your feet through the golden sand and to sit, looking out over the calm blue sea whilst lapping up the sunshine and enjoying the magnificent seafood delicacies of the island.
The island has one of the longest coastal platforms of the archipelago and therefore affords magnificent opportunities for underwater swimming. The favourable winds also make it a top spot for windsurfers. These same winds once drove the "gofio" mills dotted along the horizon, reminiscent of the windmills, the fearsome giants dauntlessly faced by Don Quijote in the literary masterpiece of the same name by Cervantes.
The great Spanish novelist, Miguel de Unamuno exiled in Fuerteventura for his own brave defiance of the political "giants" of his times, must have pondered often on the parallel.
The coasts of the island of Fuerteventura attract people who enjoy water sports of all kinds and who know that the majoreros can offer them everything they need in the way of conditions, comforts and facilities. It is not at all infrequent to see large boats drifting lazily along the coastlines whilst their owners while away the drowsy hours, fishing placidly in the sunshine.
The treasures of Fuerteventura are all there for the picking, untouched by Time, nestling in the volcanic soil, apparent to the human eye. Make your way inland towards the jewel of Betancuria, founded at the beginning of the 15th century by Jean de Bethencourt or seek out the majestic splendour of the Casa de los Coroneles de la Oliva, the last residence of the military governors on the island and a magnificent mansion of the 18th century. Or take to the water and cross over to the uninhabited Islote de Lobos (6 km2) from the northern beach of Corralejo.
Fuerteventura is an unparalleled hedonist experience. Commune with Nature on an island some 30 million years old where Time stands still. No volcanoes or volcanic outcrops exist to remind you of the volcanic activity of the island some twelve million years ago. Only La Bocaina, a narrow stretch of water separates Fuerteventura from the other most eastern island, Lanzarote and yet they could hardly be more different.
The 1,731 km2 of rolling sands - Fuerteventura is the second largest of the islands in the Canary Island archipelago - form a world apart, an island suspended in Time between the clear blue of the skies and the crystalline blue of the sea. A truly restful island.
Caleta de Fuste
About 10Km South of the airport lies Caleta de Fuste - also known as Castillo, one of the major tourist towns on the island. The town is wrapped around a horseshoe shaped beach, and offers an excellent range of water sports including windsurfing, and diving.
Caleta de Fuste has a wide range of shops, bars and restaurants catering for most tastes while those looking for more active nightlife, will find livelier bars and nightclubs in the centre of town. A main feature of this resort is the vast array of winding tracks that can be explored either by car or quad-bikes.
Caleta de Fuste has one long main street consisting of low-rise buildings where the main bars and restaurants are concentrated.
There are many quiet tree-lined streets and one of these leads to the man-made beach, set against a backdrop of hills and a few apartments.
You are never short of things to do in Caleta de Fuste with all the usual water sports available as well as golf, boat trips, diving, and even a submarine offering undersea excursions.
Whatever type of holiday you are looking for, whether it be active or relaxing, Caleta de Fuste can cater for all.
