Apartment in Malopolskie, Poland

Property Details of Malopolskie Apartment

This is a newly renovated flat in an old Krakow tenement house. Located 150 metres from the Old Town and 275 metres from the Jewish Quarter (to locate the building, search for 'Starowislna 6, Krakow' in Google Maps), this small self-catering apartment is within easy walking distance of the main tourist attractions and public transport hubs. The entrance to the apartment is in a quiet courtyard.

The flat is a recent basement conversion in a 19th century Krakow 'kamienica', which means 'stone house'. Kamienicas were tenement houses built to accommodate middle class people such as merchants and professionals. Many kamienicas were built in certain styles; for example, baroque or classical. You can see some interesting adornments on the façade of the kamienica where the apartment is located.

The flat has one window, which looks out into a private courtyard, not the street. The courtyard is a communal area shared by all the flats in the building, but it is cut off from the street, so the noises you can hear from outside the flat are minimal. There are also massive stone walls around the flat and a thick vaulted ceiling, which helps to keep out the noise and also stabilises the temperature in the flat. Near the flat, there is an original wooden staircase, which can resonate when people use it, but this only happens occasionally.

The whole area of the flat is 15 square metres, which sounds small but it's about the size of a typical ensuite hotel room but with a kitchenette. There is a bathroom (with a bath), and everything else (bedroom, kitchenette and dining area) is open plan in an 'L' shape. The flat has a double bed. Kitchen utensils and bedding are provided.

There are internet cafes nearby and a lot of restaurants and bars offer free Wi-Fi internet access. There are several food shops nearby, a launderette, a chemist's and a post office.

Local Area Details

To locate the building, search for 'Starowislna 6, Krakow' in Google Maps. The apartment is a very short walking distance from the centre of the Old Town (Stare Miasto) which is full of historic buildings and places. The most famous and the most conspicuous of them is the Sukiennice right in the middle of the central square (Rynek). 'Sukiennice' means 'cloth hall' and was built in the 15th century when Krakow was one of major European trading towns. In the old town itself there are lots of shops, cafes, bars, restaurants and clubs to suit any budget or taste. Every hour during the daytime you can hear a bugler signalling the change of hour. He plays the same tune from four sides of the tower on the cathedral of St.Mary (kosciol mariacki). The tradition dates back to the 13th century Tartar invasion of Krakow. You can also see one of the oldest university buildings in Europe: Collegium Maius. It belongs to the famous Jagellonian University and was built in the 15th century.

The royal Wawel castle is located on a hill, about 600 yards from the apartment. There is a museum there, a cathedral and a spectacular Italian style courtyard. From the castle walls you can enjoy grand views of the Vistula river and Krakow itself.

In the opposite direction from the Old Town (300 yards from the apartment) you can find the famous Krakow Jewish Quarter called Kazimierz. Krakow has a long association with the Jewish diaspora, mostly tragic. There had been a separate Jewish settlement in Krakow for at least 600 years - from the 14th century up until Word War II. There are still many original buildings which used to belong to Jewish families. Kazimierz has its own unkempt charm, quite different from the polished appearance of the Old Town. It has lots of unusually decorated bars and restaurants, often featuring artefacts from the nearby antique market. 'Alchemia' bar is a good example. On the opposite bank of the Vistula river you will find the former Jewish ghetto and a part of the original ghetto wall built by the Nazis. Oscar Schindler's enamel factory is nearby. It houses a museum which documents the history of the factory and Schindler's workers.

This is only an incomplete list of what Krakow has to offer. It has a very special feel to it and is often called one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.

If you have any other questions about the flat or its facilities, please don't hesitate to ask. You can use the email facility or contact details listed below. We look forward to welcoming you to Krakow.
