Apartment in Dubrovnik, Croatia
Property Details of Dubrovnik Apartment
Apartment Tedo is three two story houses of 60 square meters each. The houses lie 40 meters from the water a little up the mountain giving splendid unbroken views of the sea from the balconies at the front.
All houses have air condition, washing machine, satellite TV, good kitchen, living room, two bedrooms (2 and 4 beds).
At the back of the houses there is a garden (where a family of tortoises live!) and two shared terraces, both with a big barbecue.
Tedo-2 and Tedo-3 are non-smoking houses.
Breakfast is available af 6 Euro per person. 3 Euro for children under 12.
The small town of Komarna lies on Croatian coast 70 kilometres North of Dubrovnik. The town climbs up a mountain side giving almost every one of the red tiled houses a clear view of the clear azure Adriatic Sea beyond the beach. Komarna lies in the bay of Mali Ston engulfed by the mainland and the peninsula of Peljesac whose coasts are dotted with small uninhabited islands, reefs and cliffs offering a spectacular view much like Southern Thailand or Greece.
Komarna is the perfect place for making a vacation with friends and family. There is no chance of getting bored. There are a lot of historical sights nearby and world-class tourist attractions to be easily reached in a day-trip.
Local Area DetailsWater sports
There is always a game on in the towns football pitch when night falls. But activities in Komarna are primarily in the water or at the water front.
You can rent a lot of stuff in Villa Bili that will make a trip to the beach a lot more fun:
Snorkelling: Unfortunately it is not possible to rent snorkelling gear in Komarna. If you decide to invest in some the far end of the beach is the best place to snorkel. Mask and snorkel cost around four Euro and plastic flippers cost less than 15 Euro. Both can be bought in the shopping mall on Don Radovan Jerkovica in Metkovic (see "places to shop & eat"). Another possibility is the sports store behind the bus station in Metkovic (the bus station is behind the Citroen-dealer on the main road).
There are four former submarine bases along the coast towards Ploce. The bases are caves blown into the mountains. The submarines are gone but the caves are still there. It's good fun trying to find them. But it's difficult. They were built not to be seen. But search and you shall find.
Land sports
Villa Bili lets bicycles for Euro 3/ day.
Canoe Safari
The Canoe safari starts in Bozjak near Studenci just after the Kravica waterfalls and ends at the meeting point in Struge near Capljina. The track is 11 kilometres long and run through stunningly beautiful karst landscape formed by the river over thousands of years.
Kravica Waterfalls
A trip to the waterfalls will be one of your vacation's absolute highlights. Apart from offering spectacular scenery it's a great place to fish (especially for children with nets) and it's an even better place to swim.
The cold, clear water falls into a small valley. From noon onwards (when the sun gets hot) some of the water particles being hurdled into the air vaporise putting a lid of mist on top of the valley making it a pleasant shade-like feeling to be there.
Getting tired of relaxing on the sandy beach you can head out into the pool of water which is also covered by a sandy bottom. If you are up to it you can swim across the pool (notice how the water gets colder and colder), climb the rocks and jump. This is what the local teenagers do to impress one another (and perhaps the girls as well).
There is also a restaurant where you can enjoy the view and relax by listening to the rumbling from the waterfalls. There is just one problem: The falls are very difficult to find unless you have a local to lead the way. Apartment Tedo can arrange for someone to drive ahead of you for around Euro 15.
If you want to save the money for someone showing you the way there are directions lying in the houses at Apartment Tedo. These directions are fairly easy to follow but include a detour of some 40 kilometres along rugged Bosnian roads- This is NOT recommended.
The Bacina Lakes
The Bacina Lakes at Ploce is one of the most spectacularly beautiful sights in Croatia. The six linked lakes that lie about half an hours drive North of Komarna are visible from the coastal road. They more or less have the same colour as the brochures advertising diving trips to The Maldives.
The lakes are a favoured spot for the locals so it's possible to buy food and drink. Remember to bring your diving glasses. It's not The Maldives but there is an abundance of fish in the water anyway.
Norinska Tower
The Norinska Towner close to the Metkovic-Opuzen road was build by the Turks in the beginning of the 16th. century. The tower was where the Norin River met the Neretva River. The purpose was to keep the Venetians away from the valley and to have a stronghold where the Turkish possessions in Bosnia Herzegovina could be defended from. The Turks didn't quite succeed. Already in 1685 the Turks had to give in to a Venetian siege and leave the tower.
But with the towers strategic importance the Turks wanted it back. And they got it. Several times in fact. During the next centuries the Venetians and the Turks succeeded one another in being masters in the tower. This rivalry came to an end when both of them were kicked out by Austrian troops.
Under Austrian rule the Norin River altered its course and the tower lost its strategic importance and was abandoned. The tower is very well preserved and it is definitely worth to park the car and have a look while the chance is still there. There are persistent rumours that the county mayor plans to open a restaurant in the tower!!!
Narona
Narona just outside Metkovic was a Greek settlement first mentioned by the Greek historian Theopompus (Historian for Alexander The Great) in the fourth century BC. The town continued to be on of the most important towns in the area and was eventually promoted to the rank of colony under the Romans that used the town as a base for attacks on rebel states and on those pirate's nests that the island-dotted waters always fostered. Once rebels and bandits had been eradicated the town's importance grew even further as it became the regions business centre. Its status lasted until the sixth century where it began to decline to be completely abandoned in the mid seventh century.
Excavation and restoration is still going on so don't expect to see the likes of Rome or Athens. Keeping this in mind a stroll through the Forum and along the remains of the once magnificent defensive walls is a nice break from lying around getting grilled on the beach.
And besides: For those with 20-20 vision old Greek and Roman coins are still found from time to time (and by no means only by archaeologists). Should you not be as lucky as to find any yourself there is a large collection of coins found at Narona at The Archaeological Museum in Split.
Stop by the tourist office in Metkovic (Stjepana Radica 4, telephone: 00 385 20/ 681 578) to obtain a map to guide you to the ancient city of Narona. The village of Vid lies on the outskirts of the archaeological site. In connection to the school there is a small museum housing primarily artefacts from the Roman period.
Dubrovnik
One word: Go! It's tempting to spend every day of your vacation on the beach. But do allow yourself at least one excursion. Dubrovnik is a United Nations UNESCO Heritage Site. The reason for appointing these is "Protecting natural and cultural properties of outstanding universal value against the threat of damage in a rapidly developing world", as the UN puts it.
Dubrovnik is known as The Pearl of The Adriatic. Retaining its status as one of the most important Mediterranean ports from the 13th century onwards rich Dubrovnik merchants have left a city plastered with magnificent Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque building. Churches being most notable of course.
But you don't have to be interested in history or architecture to enjoy Dubrovnik. Being a university town it's a "young town" with numerous concerts, a theatre, an opera, shops, markets and greater scores of great seafood restaurants that you'd expect to find in a 70.000 population small town carrying a thousand years of history with pride.
During the Balkan wars in the mid 90's Dubrovnik was bombed sporadically from the surrounding hills. Luckily the low calibre weapons used didn't impact significantly though standing on higher ground you'll notice the patches of new red tiles on the roofs around the city. Those places are where the shells impacted.
We recommend that you visit Dubrovnik Online Travel Guide.
The Trsteno Arboretum
More than 300 species of trees and numerous plants from around The Mediterranean and the world set around architecture from the Gothic-Renaissance period onwards makes The Trsteno Arboretum widely acknowledged as one of the finest gardens in this part of Europe.
The botanical gardens at Trsteno North of Dubrovnik were founded in 1492 by the Gucetic-family who resided in the splendid 15th century summer residence in the centre of the gardens until it was nationalized by the communists.
Being able to see the gardens today can be considered somewhat of a miracle. During the civil war Serbian Navy ships and airplanes shelled the gardens with phosphorus bombs on the 2. And 3. of November 1991. Phosphorus burns and burned it did. 80 percent of the gardens went up in flames but luckily the oldest area was saved. To this day you can still see a few Mexican palm trees that live despite their outer trunks still look like charcoal.
You can't miss the gardens when you drive thru Trsteno about 20 kilometres North of Dubrovnik. The Trsteno Aboretum has telephone: (+385) 752-019.
Medjugorje
On June 24th 1981 a young woman bearing a child on her arm appeared on a hill outside the town of Medjugorje. With her free hand she urged six young people to come closer but they did not dare to do so as they sensed something extraordinary. However urged by a will they could not describe all of them came back the next day individually and she revealed herself to be The Holy Virgin.
The Holy Virgin also appeared the third day and appealed for peace. All in all she has shown herself 10 times in front of countless people and every day services in different languages are held in the town church. Since 1981 more than 20 million pilgrims have visited Medjugorje making it one of the biggest Catholic pilgrim places along side Lourdes in France.
Medjugorje is in Herzegovina on the road between Metkovic and Mostar. You can find out more about Medjugorje by clicking here. Click on "Miscellaneous" and then on "Tourist office" to check out the towns.... well: Tourist office actually :-).
