Berwick has gloden beaches in abundance, one town golf course and just to the South a links course. Discover Berwick upon Tweeds natural beauty by walking the Elizabethan Walled defences. A distance of just over one mile that can be comfortably enjoyed by all the family. Built in 1558 and virtually intact, they are uniuqe in Britain and are the finest surviving 16th Century artillery fortifications in northern Europe. They form a stark reminder of Berwick's turbulent history. Berwick's barracks, the first purpose-built infantry barracks in England, were completed in 1721 and are a stone's throw from Holy Trinity Parish Church, one of only two built during the Commonwealth period of Cromwell. The prestigiouse Town Hall dates from 1610 and is a must see. The original gaol is still there complete with the condemmed cell, branding irons, shackles and leg irons and this was one jail that treated women as equals.
