Gamla Posthusid (The Old Post House) holiday apartments are located in Saudarkrokur in the Skagafjordur region of North West Iceland. The building was originally constructed in 1952 and was an active post office until the end of 2008. It is conveniently located in the centre of town, only a few metres walking distance to the bakery, restaurants, museum and harbour. The Old Post House has just undergone major renovations to create two spacious self catering one bedroom apartments, with views of the fjord and the church. The apartments are available for holiday rental all year round.
Apartment 1 is a brand new modern spacious apartment 46.7 m², with private bathroom and kitchen. Tastefully decorated and fully equipped with everything you would need for a relaxing holiday including free wifi.
All bookings include an initial one off complimentary supply of basic breakfast ingredients such as tea, coffee, sugar, milk, muesli, bread, butter, juice, eggs etc.
Local Area DetailsSaudarkrokur is approximately a 290 km scenic 3 hr drive from Reykjavik Situated in the northwest of Iceland Saudarkrokur is the largest town in the Skagafjordur region A short detour from the main ring road will bring you to this quiet fishing village with a population of nearly 3000.
The town of Saudarkrokur is centrally located to many of the main attractions in the Skagafjordur area and nearby districts. Only a 15min drive from Saudarkrokur is the historic turf farmhouse museum Glaumbaer Just a 31 km scenic drive away is one of the most historic sites of Iceland the Bishopric at Holar which was established in 1106 38 km from Saudarkrokur is the picturesque town of Hofsos where you can take a swim in one of the most scenic placed pools in Iceland visit the Icelandic Emigration Centre and survey the magnificent Basaltic cliffs Another place not to miss in the summer are the hot springs at Grettislaug only a 15 minute drive from the apartment situated in the stunning landscape are two thermal rock pools a great place to soak and relax in approximately 39c naturally heated water Whilst there you can arrange a booking for a boat trip to Drangey Drangey is an island that juts up nearly 200m out of the sea and is a haven for a variety of bird life including the Puffin.
Whilst here in town make sure you visit Sutarinn Atlantic Leather, the only fish leather tannery in Europe. Guided tours of the factory are offered daily in the summer season and hides and designer craft leather products are available for purchase. Minjahus the local museum is open during the summer season from 1-7pm where you can view a range of historical exhibitions.
If you like to be more active then a horseriding adventure maybe for you. The Skagafjordur area is renowned for its historic and contemporary association with the horse, it is not unusual to see horses roaming in large groups in this region. They say that there is an Icelandic horse to suit every level of rider from young to old, beginner to the more experienced. There are many horseriding options for the area and you are sure to find one to suit your needs and abilities. If you prefer water activities then a river rafting trip in Skagafjordur maybe just what you are looking for. Excursions are offered at different adventure levels from the more extreme to a gentler family experience.
If you are here during the months of September through to March it is highly likely that you will experience the Aurora Borealis Northern Lights as they are a common sighting in Iceland during this time. And if you visit in winter you can enjoy skiing trips on Tindastol just outside of town.
No matter what time of the year you visit whether it be summer when you can explore the wide open spaces and all it has to offer or the pure magic of Iceland in all her winter glory your sure to have an experience of a lifetime.
