Alghero is the most beautiful tourist centre of the Riviera del Corallo with its coast abundant in isolated bays, in creeks hiding soft beaches surrounded with dense pine-woods, with indented cliffs washed by an emerald-green sea. The always gentle climate, the transparent sea with its extraordinary colours, the scent of the mediterranean maquis' vegetation are inviting for a pleasant and care-free time. It's a real paradise for sports for fishing, swimming, underwater fishing, wind-surfing, yachting, playing tennis, horse-riding ....

Alghero is an unpolluted oasis for underwater photography and archaeology. There are wonderful trips to the area with many prehistoric sites, in Nuraghi and Domus de Janas.

If you wish, your hosts can arrange a trip in theyr sailing boat, a motorsailer Ferretti Altura 33 of some 12 tons, showing you the beauty of the gulf of Alghero (Click here for information about prices). If you are interested and have some experience of diving this can be arranged to see ancient settlements and underwater caves.

Alghero also offers churches in Catalan-Gothic style; history with its town-walls, its towers, its Aragon style palaces; it means tradition with the many cultural events, the refined coral and filigree handicrafts; it means culture with the Catalan dialect of its friendly and hospitable people.

There are numerous events, performances, public festivals, coffee-houses in the town centre, discos and lots of other amusement and entertainment opportunities. If you are interested guests can visit archaeological excavations in the historical centre of the town during the work, usually in August and provided by University of Sassari and Pisa where Mario is a Lecturer. Also it is possible to organise trips around North Sardinia to visit archaeological settlements and historical monuments for which Sardinia is so famous.

Local Area Details

Alghero is situated on the shores of a beautiful bay on the north-west coast of Sardinia (Italy). It’s the tourist capital of the Coral Riviera. Alghero’s international fame is due mostly to the intelligent and rational exploitation of the incomparable beauties of its unspoilt landscape and the excellent organisation of incoming tourism.

Land and sea offer magnificent view along the 75 km of coastline which stretches from the limestone promontory of Capo Caccia to the North and the beach of La Speranza on the South. Here is all that you can expect for a relaxing holiday; silver beaches, breathtaking cliffs, indented rocky coastline, lovely coves and superb marine caves. The crystalline sea is ideal for red coral and lobsters!

According to historians the origins of the town date back to the first half of the 11th century when the influential Doria family from Genova fortified a fishing village along the north west coast of Sardinia. A strategic landing point was created. It was called L’Aleguerium due to the large quantities of sea vegetables up on the shores by the currents. This name has been seen on documents of the Doria family an his medieval latin (S’Alighera in Sardinian and l’Alguer in Catalan). Thanks to its geographical position Alghero held a very important role in trading in the Mediterranean, therefore it had to be defended frequently by the Genovese from the attacks of Pisan and Aragonese ships. The town remained Genovese until 1353, when the Catalan-Aragonese allied to the Venetians were victors against the Genovese Admiral Antonio Grimaldi at a naval battle just off Porto Conte, thus occupying the stronghold. In November 1354 Pietro IV of Aragon, known as the "Cerimonioso" or "Punyalet" repopulated Alghero with Catalans forcing the Sardinians and the Ligurians to flee. At the same time the town became part of the Kingdom of Aragon and remained such for four centuries, first under Catalan domination and then Spanish. Alghero to this day conserves the characteristics of the Catalan-Aragonese period, which can be noted in the architecture of the churches, of the buildings and of the fortifications and also in the Catalan language which is still spoken.

Anytime of year is the right time to visit Alghero where you will receive a warm welcome from Fiorella & Mario
