Chateau Montledier is an original 12th Century Chateau operating as a hotel within an extremely pleasant environment perched at the top of a ravine looking across the Montagne Noir original and into the valley of the Arn.
Chateau de Montledier, a typical french chateau is a truly impressive medieval "castle" dating from the 12th century and set amidst 3.5 hectares of un spoilt parkland on a cliff overlooking the Arn river valley within the un spoilt Montagne Noir. Montledier is a Chateau Hotel in the Haut Languedoc situated at Pont de L'Arn close to the town of Mazamet (population of circa 12,500) and a short distance from Castres and Toulouse in the Southern France region of Tarn.
The Chateau offers 20 bedrooms available for guests. There are eight luxury rooms, nine classic rooms and three standard rooms.
The Chateau is close to the hills of Laucaune, the Sidobre, the Lauregais Plain and the Pays de Cocagne which offer mountain and countryside to an estimated 2.7 million visitors per year. The Chateau is approx 42 kilometres from Carcassonne where in excess of 3 million tourists visit the old City each year.
The climate is extremely attractive with average all year round temperatures in excess of 26 degrees Celsius. In summer the temperatures can be in excess of 36 degrees temperature. As the Chateau is situated on high ground one benefits from a somewhat cooler and extremely pleasant environment.

One need not leave the Chateau and its environs as it can truly boast of a very quiet and tranquil environment and scenic views and walks and it is in itself a place of tremendous natural beauty. One can spend a quiet morning walking around the grounds of the Chateau or exploring the immediate environment. There are several hiking / walking paths adjacent to the grounds of the castle.
Historic and Architectural Interest
Chateau Montledier is situated on the ancient Cathar trail where there are many well preserved fortified towns and villages known locally as "bastides". The most famous of them are Cordes, Puycelsi, Castelnau de Montmiral, Salvagnac and Revel to name but a few. The Chateau is close to the medieval village of Hautpoul, Labruguiere and the Eco-museum at Labastide-Rouairoux. Witness here 150 years of the textile industry of France.
The Hautpoul ruins, a fortress constructed in the 5th century by the Visigoths, reminds visitors of an unsettled time, from the struggles against the Cathars in 1212 by Simon de Montfort to the religous wars. The Fuzier house (Mazamet tourist office) in the centre of Mazamet hosts the museum of Catharism. Labruguiere, a small town with concentric architecture. Revel, a fortified town surrounding a 14th century covered market. Dourgne for tapestries created in the Benedictine Abbey of En Calcat and Durfort, a small medieval village renowned for brass and copper-ware.
The famous walled city of Carcassonne is within an hours drive from the Chateau.
Outdoor Activities
The Chateau and the Mazamet environs boasts a plentiful range of sporting and leisure facilities. A few minutes drive away is the Montagnes lake with good beaches and safe swimming and childrens play areas.
A Day Out
There are many famous vineyards close by: Gaillac which is the most local; St Chinian - within a forty minutes drive on the N112 on the way to the Mediterranean. Enjoy wine tasting at the many village caves. St Chinian is a beautiful unspoilt village built in terracotta stone with its own village square.
Just before one arrives at Beziers, Valras plage which is located south of Beziers presents miles and miles of clean Medittarranean beaches. The climate here is excellent and is extremely popular with french holidaymakers who like a holiday on the coast with beautiful sea views and boasts of many speciality seafood restaurants. There is a large fish market in the village.
Golfing, fishing, archery, horse-riding, cycling, mountain climbing, walking / hiking and water sports are all readily available in the proximity of the Castle. Water sports available embrace canoeing, kayacking, water skiing, sailboarding, sub-acqua and swimming.

At the summit of the mountain, le Pic de Nore (1,200 metres) the views are stupendous especially for visitors who wish to experience the sunrise in all its splendour. The area is a veritable paradise for those interested in canoeing and other water sports and there are many paths of extraordinary beauty to be experienced - wild mushrooms, blueberries, flora and fauna may be found constantly varying with the season.
Local Life
The hustle and bustle of local life follows the rhythm of the local events with many fairs, exhibitions, fetes and festivals in Mazamet, Castres and other local towns. You may visit the pink garlic festival at Lautrec, the wine festival at Gaillac, the medieval festival at Hautpoul to name but a few.
Mazamet is an area justly proud of its "produit de terroir". Every Tuesday and Saturday there is a market in the centre of Mazamet with many local specialities on sale - home made goats cheese, charcuterie, preserves and many more to titilate the palate. From mid November to mid March there is a market devoted to foie-gras where local producers congregate and market their produce. The area is renowned for its outstanding cuisine with famous dishes "fricandeau" (braised larded veal), "melsat" (speciality white sausage), foie-gras, "confit of duck", boletus mushrooms and Cassoulet to name just a few. There are also many local vinyards and points of interest.
