Sainte Alvère is a small village in the Pegord Noir, the Dordogne region, at half an hour ride from the airport of Bergerac. The Perigord is well known for its beautiful scenery, the picturesque villages, wonderful castles, prehistoric sites, delicious food and so much more...
The village is situated in a peaceful part of the Perigord amidst hills and valleys, forests and fields yet not far away from many of the fascinating places to visit.
Our ancient mill, now renovated to make a comfortable home, is situated in rural surroundings without being at all isolated. In front of the house and its gardens is a lane which takes you to the center of the
village, some 200m further on, and behind the house are woods and fields.
We can offer you a choice of two formulas.

Chambre d'Hôtes (Bed and Breakfast)

A spacious room with two beds (a third one is possible) and private bathroom, chairs for inside and outside in the garden. You will find a refrigerator and all you need for making tea or coffee. We will serve your breakfast either in your room or on the garden.

Gîte (Selfcatering appartment):

In the gîte there is a living room with a convertible bed, a well equipped open-plan kitchen, a bedroom with two beds and a bathroom. You find here as well all you need for sitting inside or in the garden.

With the chambre d'hôtes or the gîte we let another room with two beds.

Both the chambre d'hôtes and the gîte have their own entrance at ground level and are comfortably furnished. There is enough space for eating in the garden, taking a sunbath or sitting in the shadow or at the swimming pool.

Local Area Details

The tranquil village of Sainte Alvère is an ideal place to stay. Although small, the village has everything you need. There is a well stocked supermarket, good baker's and butcher's shops, a restaurant and a bar-tabac and on Mondays there is a small market. In the summer there are special events, such as a local fete, an antique and bric a brac fair and nocturnal markets. In the nearby towns and villages there are many markets, fairs, festivals etc. as well.
The region is ideal if you are looking for an active holiday. There are endless opportunities for walking, horse-riding and cycling. The clear water of the Dordogne river (within easy reach of Sainte Alvère) is wonderful for swimming and there are lots of places on both the Dordogne and the Vézère where canoes and kayaks can be hired. Or if you prefer to take it easy, you can sunbathe on the pleasant river beaches. There are several golf courses in the neighborhood.
The region is famous for its prehistoric sites. Lascaux and Les Eyzies de Tayac are among the most well known of these.
You can also visit the numerous castles and Romanesque churches and the medieval towns such as Sarlat. Périgueux and Bergerac are also well worth a trip. The centers of these towns have been beautifully restored and they welcome visitors. In summer there are many cultural events. Every day of the week, there are markets within easy reach, selling fresh local produce as well as a range of other goods.
