Local Area DetailsThe Region
The False Bay water is pleasant for swimming and sailing, as it is significantly warmer and calmer than the Atlantic Ocean just the other side of the Cape. Sea temperatures in summer are up to 20°C.
The Bay is also a favoured haunt for whales and their calves, dolphins and seals and they are commonly sighted. On the other side of the bay, at Boulders, is a resident community of Jackass penguins.
Within easy reach of Emerald Bay are many other beautiful, white sandy beaches, spectacular coastal drives and a selection of excellent restaurants.
Just 30 minutes drive away is central Cape Town, one of the world's most beautiful cities. It is a fascinating place to visit, rich in culture and history, an eclectic mix of African and European influences. The city is dominated by the 1000metre high Table Mountain, host to an amazing number of flora and fauna - more than found in the whole of the UK.
The views are phenomenal and the cableway makes it easily accessible for those who prefer not to walk.
The world renowned Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, at the foot of Table Mountain, are the most beautiful gardens and a must to visit, with 36 landscaped hectares of indigenous plants. In the summer, outdoor concerts are held, with a wide variety of music.
The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront is a successful example of a rejuvenated working port. It is atmospheric and packed with restaurants, bars, music venues and many interesting shops. There are also cinemas and markets and it tremendously popular day and night.
The winelands are only a fifteen minute drive from Emerald Bay. The main town is Stellenbosch, which has much Cape Dutch architecture. The wine route surrounding Stellenbosch encompasses nearly three dozen vineyards offering sales and tastings. These vary form the very smart, large international cellars to small, old-fashioned ones. Bicycles are available to hire so there is no excuse for drink driving!
About the area
Overlooking the Cape of Good Hope, Emerald Bay is the perfect place to stay for your visit to the Cape area of South Africa. Situated right on False Bay near Strand and Somerset-West, Emerald Bay is an area of the Greenways Estate, with a nine-hole mashie golf course, swimming pools and tennis courts. Emerald Bay, with its lush surroundings, offers an atmosphere of relaxation and plenty of opportunity for recreation. There are spectacular mountain views of the Hottentots and the Cape, and captivating sea views.
Activities
Golf
There are many golf courses within 10km of the house, not to mention the mashie nine hole course on your doorstep, which is free to use. The other local course is the far side of Strand, near Somerset Mall. Also telephone 021 686 1668 for more information on golf in the area.
Scenic Drives
There are many wonderful drives around the Cape area. The majestic Peninsula, with its renowned coastal drive from Muizenberg to Cape Point to Hout Bay via the magnificent and famous Chapman's Peak to Seapoint. Chapmans Peak is due to re-open in early 2004. Another great drive is out past Gordons Bay to Bettys Bay and Hermanus.
Wine Tasting
There are so many vineyards to choose from that it can be difficult deciding where to begin. We have visited a number of vineyards around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. They range from large, commercial estates, beautifully kept, and often with other attractions to wonderfully old-fashioned building with cobwebs abound and no pretence. The cost of wine tasting is anything from free to R20 and then an average price for a bottle is R30. It is well worth stocking up even just for the duration of your stay. Franschhoek also has a number of quality vineyards, some with restaurants serving excellent food.
Beaches
The choice of beaches on the Cape Peninsula is vast, but each beach is unique, offering something to suit every beach goer. There are beaches for families, suntanning, snorkelling, boardsailing, surfing, fishing and swimming. There are also unofficial nudist beaches at Sandy Bay. The False Bay waters are generally 5°C warmer than those of the Atlantic, but beaches on the Atlantic are generally more sheltered from the south-east wind.
Wildlife
At Cape Point there are baboons, zebra, ostrich, and various antelope. There are African penguins at Boulders Beach, Rock Dassies on Table Mountain, and whales, dolphins and seals can all be seen around the Cape coast. There are also seals in the harbour at the V&A Waterfront. Whale Hotline - 083 910 1028
Diving
Blue Print Charters offer professional dive charters to all the dive sites around the Cape Peninsula, including wrecks, seals, reefs, dolphins, and night dives.
