Local Area DetailsThe Great Smokies: Treasure and Triumph in the Tennessee Mountains!
The Great Smoky Mountains draw more visitors than any other national park in the United States. Over 9 million people annually make some sort of pilgrimage to these mountains, that are divided between North Carolina and Tennessee. The allure is simple: Mother Nature at her finest! The Smokies are a playground for anyone looking to spend some time outdoors. On the Tennessee side, the Smokies are just a stone's throw away from small towns, amusement parks, and cities that can round out a Tennessee vacation. A day's itinerary can include hiking, fishing, swimming, bird watching, golfing, hang gliding, shopping, white water rafting, kayaking, canoeing, or any number of active pursuits.
The best way to see the Great Smokies is to abandon the car and get out in them. The 520,000-acre park has hiking trails winding all through it, from trails as simple as half-hour hikes leading to a waterfall, to bits and pieces of the Appalachian Trail that stretch from Georgia to Maine. Hearty hikers will want to have a go at the Boulevard Trail, a 15-mile round trip that leads to Mt. LeConte. Another popular route is the Newfound Gap Trail, which traverses some pretty rough country weaving its way to Clingman's Dome, the highest mountain in the park. This is the highest portion of the Appalachian Trail. Incredible views of the park await those who conquer the trail. People with kids may want to trek along the path leading to Abrams Falls. Abrams Creek is a great place to let the little ones splash around, and the gorgeous views along the trail will make everyone happy.
Just outside the northern entrance to the park is the shopping haven of Gatlinburg. Even though it is a very small mountain town, Gatlinburg has over 200 shops selling everything from mountain crafts to stylized weaponry. Leather shops abound. Firearm sales are also popular. One of the best ways to see Gatlinburg is by taking a ride up the mountain on the Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway. Year-round, the tram whisks visitors to the Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort & Amusement Park. In summer, the resort has hiking and bicycling trails. In winter, skiers and snowboarders have ample slopes to fill the bill.
West of Gatlinburg is the sleepy little town of Townsend. Billing itself as "the peaceful side of the Smokies," Townsend is for those who don't want the hustle and bustle of Gatlinburg. One of the favorite activities in the area is the swimming hole known as the Townsend Y. No relation to the YMCA, this is one of the best spots in the area for a dip when the summer sun brings the high heat. Visitors can float lazily down the river on inner tubes, or jump off the small cliffs that overlook the pool.
North of Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge has been a tourist attraction for years, beginning in the 1930s when visitors used Pigeon Forge as a jumping off point into the Great Smokies. In the 1980s, Dolly Parton looked at the success of Branson, Missouri and decided to bring some country music flavor to the Appalachians. The result was Dollywood. This is one of the fastest growing amusement parks in the country, with over 40 live musical performances daily and 30 rides, all set in a "down home" theme. Traditional craftsmen work on pottery, wood carvings, and blacksmithing. The Eagle Mountain Sanctuary houses bald eagles that cannot be released into the wild.
The closest big city to the Smokies is Knoxville, located about 35 miles from Pigeon Forge. Knoxville was long known as a Wild West-like town, complete with deadly gunfights being fought in its streets. Today, Knoxville has transformed itself into one of the most progressive areas in Tennessee, and has served as the launching pad for musicians like the Everly Brothers, Dolly Parton, and guitar legend Chet Atkins. Literary stalwarts like James Agee and Nikki Giovanni have used Knoxville's eclectic heritage as their muse. Examples of this rich cultural climate can be seen at the Lamar House-Bijou Theatre. This former saloon hosts live musical performances and "jobs-in" Broadway shows. Children of all ages will enjoy the East Tennessee Discovery Center, a museum where the sign "do not touch!" does not exist. Children are encouraged to immerse themselves in this combination planetarium, insect zoo, and fossil exhibit.
The area around the Great Smoky Mountains is one of great diversity. The Appalachian heritage is evident in the meticulous nature of the native craftsmen. The outdoors invite all those who revel in the splendor of nature. A vacation in the region is a trip on the festive side, a journey to the fiber of America formed by some of the oldest mountains in the world
