Local Area Details

Although Akyaka has grown in recent years it remains a picturesque village There are no high rise hotels any construction has adhered strictly to the traditional architectural style of the region Numerous wooden balconies intricately arranged pantiled roofs and delicately carved fretwork shutters give the houses that tumble down the hillside towards the beach their distinctive appeal

The atmosphere too remains very Turkish There are several small grocery shops a fruit and vegetable stall and a choice of restaurants You can still sit and watch elderly women driving their flocks of goats and sheep along the streets The narrow sandy beach shelves very gently into the sea making it ideal for young children.

Akyaka is surrounded by forestry commission land on one side and by a conservation area on the other thus offering superb opportunities for exploring The remarkably untouched shingle beach at Cinar is a 50minute walk away.

Akyaka meandering little river and its delta are a wonderful habitat for flora and fauna especially birds and freshwater turtles and humans can enjoy this natural environment too dining in one of the pretty riverside restaurants.

From Akyaka it is easy to go by dolmus to Mugla a halfhour journey Mugla has one of the biggest and best weekly markets for miles around where livestock is traded alongside fruit and vegetables herbs and spices fruit teas leatherwork and fabrics Mugla is equally fascinating on non market days when you can wander around the streets of the bazaar with its tinsmiths coppersmiths barbers tailors and hamam Turkish bath dating back to the 1200s.

Akyaka is also a convenient base from which to visit Cleopatras Island by boat and Dalyan Caunos Pamukkale Ephesus and Aphrodisias by road Even those not wishing to hire a car will be able to explore many fascinating aspects of Turkey as Simply Turkeys own range of excursions carried out in small groups offered from here includes a visit to Ephesus a gulet cruise around Cleopatras Island and Ga Bay and a tour of traditional rural villages.

From the southern end of the Gulf of Gokova stretches one of southwest Turkeys most scenic and least commercialised regions the beautiful Rhodian Peraea Made up of the long narrow Datca peninsula and the equally craggy Loryma peninsula the Rhodian Peraea is scarcely populated and barely touched by tourism Rugged peaks and deep valleys shaded by olive groves and pine forests are punctuated sporadically by sleepy fishing villages making the area suitable for those who wish to take life at a leisurely pace delighting in the glorious land and seascapes and swimming in crystal clear bays
