Local Area Details

The historical town of Cortona, Tuscany, which is located approx. 4 km. from the villa, offers a typical Tuscan landscape, a mixture of art and nature, medieval and renaissance. Because of its high altitude (600 meters), one can see a fantastic panorama all around--the wide fertile plain of the Valdichiana, the mountains of Siena, Monte Amiata and Monte Cetone, and the magnificent shining expanse of Lake Trasimeno. The road from the plains to the city winds through terraced olive groves divided by stone walls, pines, cypresses, farms, monasteries and monumental churches.

Cortona was the home of Luca Signorelli and Pietro Berrettini, better known as Pietro da Cortona, and the birthplace of Gino Severini. The city has an outstanding collection of fine art, the most famous being Fra Angelico’s Annunciation in the Museo Diocesano. The Museo dell’Accademia Etrusca and the many churches within the city offer other fine works. Of immense academic interest is the collection of parchments, manuscripts, incunabula and printed volumes in the Biblioteca Comunale and the Accademia Etrusca.

In recent years, Cortona has been the home of the American University of Georgia, providing a further stimulus to the intellectual life of the city and has also become better know to the American public through the books of Frances Meyes, which, narrated with Cortona as their backdrop, remained at the top of the bestsellers in American for several months.

You may visit the Etruscan tombs in the neighbourhood and explore the nearby historical sites such as Arezzo, Perugia, Assisi, Volterra. Should you prefer to do sports, within a short walking distance are facilities for swimming, horsebackriding and tennis. The lake of Trasimeno is a 10 minute drive away.

The town dominates the wide plain and is close to the border of Umbria. From Cortona you can easily reach many other famous towns and locations, such as: Spoleto, Gubbio, Città di Castello, Montepulciano, San Sepolcro, and Florence. Rome and Pise are 220 kms far, Venice and Verona 300.

Beaches are available on the Lake Trasimeno, six kms away. Both on the shore and on the islands which can be reached by ferryboats. There aren't typical shore beaches, but interesting and strangely mysterious walks in the thick vegetation which lead to quiet simple beaches. The tiny villages by the docks give you access to anything you might need.

You can enjoy spending some time horse riding on the hills along the "pianelli" of olive groves, in the Cortona countryside.
