Cottage in Sicily, Italy
Property Details of Sicily Cottage
Sicily is a marvellous, and still rather undiscovered corner of Italy, and this holiday home provides the perfect base for discovering the island.
The cottage is near the town of Sciacca Terme, itself situated in the midst of the island's ancient Greek temples. Sciacca is a thermal spa town by the sea, and with a traditional, working fishing port. It's 60km from Agrigento's valley of temples, and 30km from the temples at Selinunte and the Ancient Greek ruins of Eraclea Minoa. The Sicilian capital, Palermo, is easily reachable, lying 80km from the house.
Sciacca has its own beaches too, and within a radius of 30km there are at least three protected natural reserves on the sea with wonderful beaches: Torre Salsa and the mouths of the Platani and Belice Rivers.
The cottage is situated between sea and Mountain, looking to the south-west, and enjoying spectacular Sicilian sunsets. The house sits in its own grounds, between olive and carob trees. With panoramic views and a quiet position, this detached property is 2km from town and 5kms from the sea.
It can accommodate 4 people, with a well-equipped kitchen, bedroom, living room with a sofa-bed, bathroom with shower, washing machine, veranda, and reserved free parking. The rooms are heated by electric heater or, should you wish, by an open fire. Bed linen, towels, tea cloths, washing up liquid, washing powder, softener and toilet rolls are also provided. To start you off, you will find a complimentary basket of essentials such as jam, cheese, butter, milk, coffee, tea, buns, orange juice, salt and pepper, organic olive oil, fruit, bread, buns and water.
A few minutes' drive takes you to the centre of Sciacca, and its restaurants, pubs, banks, supermarkets, post office, hairdressers, cinemas, churches and other visitor attractions.
Local Area DetailsOr head down the coast to Agrigento, which sits on a bluff overlooking its world-famous collection of Greek temples. And heading out into southern Sicily you'll find plenty to discover. The town of Ragusa, a Baroque masterpiece lying on two levels, is a treasure house of exotic buildings. And there are other Baroque delights, including Modica and the jewel in the crown, Noto.
As you explore the Mediterranean's largest island, you'll realise that while Sicily may be part of Italy, it's an exciting amalgam of all the cultures that have ruled here. Romans, Arabs, Normans, French, Spanish and Bourbons have come and gone, leaving a diversity of churches, temples, theatres and a very eclectic cuisine. Marvel at the Byzantine mosaics in Cappella Palatina in Palermo. Climb the blackened sides of smoking Mount Etna, or watch a performance in Siracusa's Teatro Greco, or view the Roman mosaics at Villa Romana del Casale.
