The Costa de la Luz stretches almost 200km from Tarifa to the Portuguese boarder. The Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light) has long fine sandy beaches backed by pine covered dunes, within this area you will find El Puerto de Santa Maria probably the most famous resort in the area, known by the Spanish nationals for it?s laidback approach but relatively unknown to foreign visitors.
The Costa de la Luz has many resorts all within driving distance of each other such as Bolonia, Zahara de los Atunes, Los Caos de Meca, and Sancular de Barrameda.
The beaches and resorts are interspersed with cities and ports such as Cdiz, El Puerto de Santa Maria, Huelva and Isla Cristina with extensive wetlands, which is a haven for wildlife the most important area being the National park Coto Doana
North of Cadiz, the oldest city in Europe, the towns of Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlucar and El Puerto de Santa Maria form the famous Sherry Triangle and are best known for their sherry. But apart from being the home of Sherry this area has lots to see and do. The beaches stretch for miles and being so close to Africa there are hours of endless sunshine.
The town of El Puerto de Santa Maria is 10km north east of Cadiz across the bay of Cadiz and is best known for its ferry El Vaporcito which has been in operation for over 100 years carrying passengers to and from Cadiz to El Puerto.
Columbus visited El Puerto in 1480 and received encouragement for his travel plans and he also met Juan de la Cosa who in 1500 issued the first world map.
El Puerto has a famous bull ring which dates back to 1880 with space for 15,000 spectators and bull fighting is still enjoyed during the Feria season, which are during the month of August and during the Feria de la Primavera which is in early May. This Feria is dedicated to Sherry and 180,0000 half bottles get drunk in 4 days!!!
There are several Bodegas in the town centre all of which can be visited by the public. The most famous being the Osborne and Terry Bodegas who export sherry and brandy worldwide
El Puerto is an excellent place to sample local tapas and seafood, for which it is famous.
Most of the town is on the north bank of the Rio Guadelete, where bars and restaurants line the palm-covered streets
Entertainment is lively in the summer in the town centre and in Vista Hermosa everything starts very late and goes on well into the early hours, hence the famous Spanish siesta.
The climate is one of El Puerto?s best features with endless days of sunshine even during the winter months temperatures rarely fall below 20.
Andalusia?s wildlife is the most varied in Europe, with fauna and flora in protected areas.
For the nature lovers the area boasts of two Natural parks, the Sierra de Grazalema and El Coto Donaa, both within driving distance and well worth a visit.
