British Airways Cabin Crew Reject New Offer

More bad news is on the way for British Airways and its passengers. Reports now show that the cabin crew for this carrier have overwhelmingly rejected the latest pay offer from the airline. This is now setting the stage for what will be a prolonged period of strike action.

The members of the British Airlines Stewards and Stewardesses Association were just recently balloted earlier this month. Some 81 percent voted in favor of rejecting the latest deal offered by the carrier. The Unite union had strongly recommended members to reject this offer. This was a decision that British Airways chief executive, Willie Walsh, called bizarre.

As a result of this ballot, British Airways could actually face up to 20 days of strike action over the coming months. This would put thousands of people at flight risk. After voting, the union leaders did call on British Airways to really listen to their employees.

The Unite’s joint general secretaries, Derek Simpson and Tony Woodley, said that British Airways management should take note of their own employees’ strong rejection of the offer and immediately address the outstanding concerns. They should make no mistake that Unite is fully committed to supporting their members in furthering this dispute if no resolution is found.

The union must give the carrier as least seven days notice before taking any kind of industrial action. Thus, strikes could be possible by mid-May. This will only further cripple an already struggling airline, which is expected to post more significant loses for this financial year.
