Foreign Office Warns British Travelers to Avoid Bangkok After Barricades Overrun

Apparently the Foreign Office has once again warned its travelers that they should avoid all but essential travel to Bangkok. This report comes as Thai troops have now overrun barricades that were set up in the heart of the city by Red Shirt leaders.

So far, at least five people are known to have died as forces loyal to prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva stormed into the Red Shirt barricades. This overrun now ends weeks of protests. Red Shirt Leaders, who have been calling for dissolution of parliament and fresh elections, have surrendered to government forces. They said that they wish to see no further blood shed.

These protest areas, where campaigners had been residents since March, are now deserted. A night time curfew has now been placed into affect. However, pockets of resistance remain at the strategic Ratchaprasong intersection. In this area, Red Shirt Leaders are urging their protestors to continue to fight for democracy.

At the northeast end of the country, protestors attacked city hall in Udon and Khon Haen in solidarity with the Bangkok demonstrations. A statement from the Foreign Office said that the situation currently in Bangkok is unpredictable.

Violent clashes between protestors and government forces have been occurring over the past few days. British Travelers are advised to avoid areas that include Ratchaprarop, Ding Daeng, Victory Monument, Lumpini Park, Sala Daeng, Silom, Sathorn, Bon Kai and Long Toey.

Helicopters continue to circle the skies over Bangkok. Right now operations below have been halted to allow thousands of protestors to leave the area. These actions do follow a six day skirmish around the perimeter of the protest camp. This lead to the death of a renegade general who had backed the protestors.
