British Airways Strike Back on After Unite Wins Appeal
Abi BrayWell it seems that the Unite union has won the second round in the court room. This news comes just ahead of a fresh round of strikes by the British Airways cabin crew. This strike got the go ahead once again after the High Court overturned a ban on industrial action.
The ruling follows an injunction granted to British Airways on Monday. This injunction actually ruled that the Unite union had not reported results of its strike ballot correctly to its members, and thus, the strike action was viewed as illegal.
However, Unite went on to appeal against this decision. The panel of senior judges, inducing Lord Chief Justice, ruled 2-1 in favor of overturning the injunction. Due to this, strikes are now free to go ahead, and the first strike could start as early as next week.
The joint leader of the Unite union, Derek Simpson, said that this is not a moment for being triumphant. The union should have never been in this process to begin with. The case brought by British Airways was trivial and, in his opinion, irresponsible. He went on to add that the cabin crew would not go on strike before Monday.
British Airways said that it was very disappointed for their customers that the appeal had been upheld. The company said in a statement that they will implement their contingency plan to keep British Airways flying. Unite’s strikes have fail twice, and they will fail again.
The first strike had been scheduled to start as of Tuesday to end on May 22nd. This was going to be followed up with three further five-day stoppages to start on May 24th, May 30th, and June 5th. Right now it is not sure if any of these dates will still be used.
