British Airways Continues Attempts to Halt Strikes
Sharon MillerAlthough British Airways has said that they are well prepared to take on these strikes, it seems that the airline is still continuing in a legal bid to halt the strikes. In fact, British Airways has just recently warned the Unite union that it intends to return to the courts in a bid to have the strike action ruled unlawful.
For those that have been following the strikes, they know that this will be the second time for this set of strikes that British Airways is going to the courts to intervene. Last time British Airways won in the court room, but then the Unite union won an appeal against the decision 2-1.
British Airways has written to the Unite union, reminding them to retain all relevant paperwork. The airline even went on to stressed that it is not appealing the court’s decision last week. In fact, the airline said that it intends to continue with a full hearing on the legality of the strikes. The airline said that the union would have been fully aware that the point of law over the strike ballot result would come to a full court case in due course.
The Unite union continues with the British Airways cabin crew strike despite these warnings. The union went on to say that they are holding strong with crew determined to end the intimidation by the company as they fight to save their jobs.
The Unite union said that it estimates the strike to have cost the airline about £70 million so far. It could cost as much as £152 million as passengers switch to other airlines during the peak summer season.
