Uncertainty in Airline Industry Leads to Brits Choosing Staycations for their Bank Holiday

It seems that this bank holiday is going to see a lot of Brits choosing to stay home instead of traveling overseas. Due to this, travelers have been warned to expect gridlocks at pinch points across the country. More than fifteen million drivers are expect to take to the roads this holiday.

Up to one million more travelers will get behind the wheel of a car for this bank holiday than what happened last year. A lot of this has to do with the uncertainty in the airline industry, like the strikes over at British Airways. However, the affects of the ash cloud have also deterred travelers from taking holidays overseas.

However, travelers on the roadways are not free from worry. There are a ton of disruptions that are to be expected on the roadways as well. One of the main problems is a dozen or so of areas that are undergoing road work. Although some of the areas that were suppose to be undergoing roadwork have been put on hold, there are still a number of places that have not.

According to the AA, routes to the southwest of England will be particularly busy. Congestion is also expected to be severe on roads to national parks and major areas that offer out of town shopping centers.

In an attempt to ease pressure on the network, the Highways Agency said that it was lifting or completing over half its roadwork schemes over the Bank Holiday weekend. This will see the completion of at least 23 schemes. Another 31 will be suspended until the end of the holiday. As said before, there will be at least 32 locations that will still have construction going on.
