British Airways and Union Talks Continue to Fail
Stewart PerryAlthough there is nothing more British travelers want than for the British Airways cabin crew strike to be over, it appears that is not going to happen anytime soon. British Airways is facing further strikes by cabin crew members after the latest talks between the airline and the Unite union failed to reach another agreement.
The Acas conciliation service said that they, regrettably, were unable to break the deadlock and move closer to a deal. This, of course, paves the way for yet another strike ballot. If the cabin crew votes for another strike, then a new wave of walkouts could start in the first week of August. This would come during the peak of school and summer holiday periods.
Acas said that, at the present, there are no further meetings planned. However, Acas will continue to monitor the development and their services remain available.
British Airways cabin crew workers have staged a massive 22 days of strikes this year alone. A spokesman for the union said that Unite remains committed to finding a settlement which addresses its members’ concerns. They will remain in touch with Acas and with British Airways to that end.
Despite all of this, British Airways said that it remains, and always has been, available for talks. The industrial action was initiated by changes to staffing levels, but currently centers on the removal of travel concessions from striking workers.
So far, industrial action has cost the airline some £150 million. It recently said that passenger numbers were 14.2 percent lower in May than a year earlier.
