Ryanair Announces Increases to Checked Baggage Allowance
Dave BondGood news for Ryanair passengers, the airline has just announced that it is to raise its weight allowance for checked baggage to 20kg. Although this sounds like good news on the surface, people can only take advantage of this new feature if they are willing to pay for it.
Travelers can now check in bags that weigh up to 20kg into the hold. This is going to cost that person £50 per return flight. Luggage that weights up to 15kg will still cost £30 per return flight. The fee itself only applies to passengers checking in luggage online. Travelers who check in luggage at the airport are going to have to pay £70 per bag, per return flight for 15kg bags. They will be paying £90 for the 20kg bag weight limit.
The airline still plans to increase its charges for checked baggage by up to a third during peak travel months. A spokesperson for the airline said that Ryanair continues to encourage passengers to travel light by leaving checked in bags at home and taking advantage of their free 10kg carry on allowance.
Just earlier this year, it was reported that the Irish carrier’s extra charges had risen by 700 percent since 2006. Ryanair’s currency calculations continue to punish British travelers who pay in sterling. British passengers pay £15 to check-in a piece of luggage of up to 15kg, while the majority of European travelers pay only 15 euros (currently equivalent to £12.53). As of right now, the airline said that it has no plans to reconsider its policy. This news comes despite the pound’s recent rise against the euro to the highest level since back in 2008.
