World Cup Referees Are Now Ready to Embrace Goal Line Technology

It now appears that some referees are now ready to embrace goal line technology for the World Cup. One such referee, English ref Howard Webb, said that he would be open to technological aid if it helps refs get the calls right during the game.

Webb went on to say that he is very open minded about anything that makes refs more credible as match officials. Whatever tools he is given, he will use them to the best of his ability. He will use all the experience he has to try and come to the correct decision and let everyone play a fair game.

However, the FIFA President, Sepp Blatter, did say back in March that he did not want any kind of non-human intervention in football. However, he did apologize to both England and Mexico on Tuesday for refereeing blunders that worked against both of the teams. He also announced that there would be a special meeting of the game’s rule making body next month. He said that he will just watch this space and interest and see where it goes. Overall, they are just going to see what comes along.

The head of refereeing for FIFA, Jose Maria Garcia Aranda, said that he would not be drawn into the debate. He said that his duty and responsibility is not to talk or discuss about the use of technology. His duty and responsibility, and the referees’ responsibility, is to perform as well as possible.

The International Football Association Board has previously considered two options to actually help referees and linesmen. These two things include a ball with a microchip in it and a camera based Hawk Eye replay system like the one used in tennis.
