Although Germany was not able to come in first at this year’s World Cup, they were able to come in third. After being knocked out of going to the final World Cup game in the semi-finals, Germany went on to defeat Uruguay, 3-2, to clinch the third place spot in the World Cup football tournament in South Africa.

The game took place on a rainy evening in the city of Port Elizabeth. Germany and Uruguay played a very exciting and entertaining match overall. In fact, the game winning goal came in the 82nd minute of the game from midfielder Sami Khedira. He was able to score with a header after the Uruguay defense failed to clear a corner kick from Germany’s Mesut Oezil.

However, Uruguay’s star striker, Diego Forlan, did come close to sending this game into extra time with the final kick of the match. Unfortunately for Uruguay fans, his kick hit the crossbar. Earlier in the game Forlan was able to give his team a two one lead with his fifth goal of the tournament. It was only about five minutes later that Germany was able to equalize the scoreboard.

At halftime, everything was all tied up at 2-2. However, as we all know now, Germany was able to score again and win the game. Between Germany and Uruguay, they have won five World Cup titles. The Germans are 3-time champions, and this actually marks their second consecutive World Cup that they placed third. Uruguay should go home happy, however. This was their best World Cup performance in over 40 years.
