British Airways Cabin Crew Announce Rejection of Final Pay Offer

It seems that any hope for a resolution coming between British Airways and their cabin crew has gone up in smoke. This news comes just as the cabin crew, which is being represented by the United union, has rejected the airline’s final pay offer. This, of course, raises the possibility of further industrial action.

The Unite union currently represents some 90 percent of the British Airways 12,000 cabin crew. It said that 3,419 of its members, or about 67 percent, voted against the revised offer. The union leaders now say that they would move on to decide the next move.

This new vote marks yet another odd twist in this long-running saga. This disagreement started last November when British Airways announced it was cutting crew pay and was reducing staff numbers. The new offer that was put on the table included two years of guaranteed rises in basic salary from February 2011 in addition to annual incremental pay increases.

A spokesman for the union said that Unite will now meet with the cabin crew this week to consider their next steps. The union had chosen not to make any kind of recommendations on this new offer. The union wanted to leave it up to the members themselves. Tony Woodley and Derek Simpson, the Unite joint leaders, said that it was up to members to make up their minds as to whether this offer was acceptable. This offer would have been able to draw the prolonged and bitter conflict to a close.

The bad points in the offer were apparently the fact that no further recruitment to British Airways’ current fleet of aircraft. There would also be a vast reduction in the terms and conditions for all new staff. There was also the loss of staff travel for life for involvement in the strike in any way.
