France sees Flight Disruptions Thanks to Airport Strikes

Stewart Perry

Apparently a strike by air traffic controllers is now causing a lot of travel disruptions all across France. One in five flights from Paris’s main international airport, Charles de Gaulle, have been canceled. This is just yet more bad news for the airline industry in Europe, which has been seeing its fair share of trouble ever since the economic downturn.

Half of the flights had to be canceled from Paris’s second biggest airport, Orly. This airport serves both domestic and some international destinations. The airport said that disruptions were expected at most French airports due to the ongoing strike. This is just worsened by the fact that many people are leaving from their summer holidays trying to return home.

It appears that unions called the strike to protest against the plans to merge the French air traffic control system into a European wide system. Apparently this strike action is scheduled to run until Thursday morning.

Although the strike is now pretty much over, officials are saying that people should not feel relaxed just yet. If an agreement cannot be reached, then it is likely that more strikes could pop up at any time. More strikes would just cause yet more disruptions for all of France. It, of course, causes problems for other places around Europe that are trying to fly into France.

Of course, strikes are not something that Europe is not use to seeing. British Airways cabin crew members have taken part in many strikes this year. Since an agreement could not be reached between the airline and its cabin crew, British Airways is likely to see more strikes as well.
