United States and UK Warn Against Travel to Maldives Capital

It seems that, as of last Wednesday, the United States and the UK have issued travel advisories to their respective citizens. They are warning their people to avoid traveling to Male, which is the capital of Maldives. This is due to the violent street protests triggered by a political crisis.

Ever since last month, a very big struggle for power has been going on in this area. It has been taking place between President Mohamed Nasheed and the opposition parties. Just last week, apparently more than nine police officers and six civilians were injured in several street demonstrations.

During a separate warning issued online, the United States and Britain noted that demonstrations in Male are starting to spiral out of control. Thus, visitors to this area should avoid large political gatherings and state buildings of any kind. The United States embassy in Colombo said that the demonstrations have not targeted foreigners. They have not been any demonstrations in the resort islands or outside of Male.

As most people already know, Maldives is an upmarket tourism destination. It is famous for its beaches and pretty water. There are tons of tourist locations outside of Male. In fact, most tourists can travel to this area and get to their resorts without even having to pass through Male.

The United States is currently asking and urging Maldives to accept offers of international mediation to resolve the political deadlock. The United States has also called on Maldives and all of its parties to sort out their differences and work towards serving the needs of the Maldivians.
