Third Quarter Revenue for easyJet Looks Strong Despite Ash Could

Apparently easyJet’s third quarter revenue to the end of June rose more than 5 percent to £759.2 million. This great news came despite the volcanic ash cloud that cost the airline some £65 million. The well known budget airline also said that it expects to make a full year profit of about £100 to £150 million compared to just £43.7 million last year.

Carolyn McCall, who is easyJet’s new chief executive, said that the company has continued to deliver a good commercial performance in the quarter. The airline has seen a total revenue increase of 5.3 percent. All of this came in spite of the challenges presented by significant disruptions caused by the volcanic ash cloud. It also came in spite of the combination of air traffic control industrial action and crewing issues in some parts of the network.

As many travelers will remember, the volcanic ash cloud in April forced easyjet to cancel 7,314 flights and disrupted the travel plans of nearly one million passengers. Just last week Ryanair said that the volcano cost it an estimated £42 million.

The airline went on to say that bookings are in line with last year, and it had sold 64 percent of its seats for the three months to the end of September. The airline also said that if they do not count the effects of the volcano, then their number of occupied seats increased 10 percent in the quarter. However, by factoring in the volcano, they had a very modest increase of just 1.7 percent. Overall, the total revenue per seat in the last three months rose 3.5 percent to £53.23.
