Heathrow Airport Records Busiest Ever Month

Stewart Perry

It now seems that Britain’s largest airport, Heathrow Airport, has now recorded its biggest ever month in July of 2010. This announcement, which was just made this week, is great news for Heathrow Airport and the travel industry as a whole.

This airport, which is located in west London, handled some 6.7 million passengers last month. This is, of course, up 3.5 percent on what it did during July of 2009. The month included Heathrow’s busiest day ever as well. This day took place on July 18, and the airport handled some 232,000 passengers.

The growth at the airport was driven by one market the most; this was the European market. In fact, the airport saw a growth of 9.5 percent in the European market. The rise in numbers at Heathrow compensated for a dip in passenger numbers that were seen in many UK airports last month.

Numbers at Stansted Airport fell by 7.2 percent to just 2.02 million. Of course, this was not the only airport that was hit by a decline. Southampton saw its numbers fall to 188,000. Glasgow was down 3.6 percent to just under 789,000. Aberdeen also decreased by 4.1 percent to just under 277,000. The good news, however, is that Heathrow was not the only airport that saw an increase. In fact, Edinburgh also saw an increase of 0.6 percent to just over 961,000.

These airports, together, handled nearly 58.5 million passengers in the first seven months of this year. This is an overall drop of 4.5 percent compared to July of 2009. However, the important thing to note here is that some airports are starting to show a real improvement again.
