More British Holidaymakers Left Stranded After the Collapse of Sun4U

It’s a story that too many people have heard this year. Another tour operator has collapsed and left some 1,200 British holidaymakers stranded abroad. This time the tour operator that went under was the Birmingham-based Sun4U.

This company, which specialized in Spain and Mallorca holidays, announced on its website that, as of Thursday night, it had ceased trading. The company went on to advise passengers that they should contract the ABTA for information about refunds or arranging alternative holiday plans.

Reports right now show that most customers that were left stranded were abroad in Spain. Sun4U is believed to have suffered badly due to the flight ban that was caused by the Icelandic ash cloud crisis. Around 40 members of its staff at its call center were informed of the collapse just yesterday morning.

Right now the ABTA has said that customers who booked Air Travel Operators’ Licensing packages should be able to continue with their holidays as planned. A spokesman for the ABTA said that approximately 1,200 people are left stranded at the moment. Most of them are in Spain. Anyone that has booked a package holiday must contact the Civil Aviation Authority or contact the supplier named on their invoice.

The Civil Aviation Authority has confirmed that repatriation measures were being put in place for all passengers with Air Travel Operators’ Licensing packages. However, they did warn that passengers who used Sun4U merely as a travel agent to book flights would have little protection.

A spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority said that they will be putting arrangements in place for Air Travel Operators’ Licensing packages. Sun4U holidaymakers who are abroad can just finish their holidays as planned and then return to the UK with no problems.
