Two British Climbers Rescued From Freezing to Death Thanks to Text Message

Reports now show that two British climbers were recently trapped on an Italian Alpine ledge in a freezing storm for more than 24 hours. They were later airlifted out of there by helicopter. However, the helicopter never would have known were to find them had it not been for the text message that the British climbers sent to their friend in Shrewbury.

Tom Greenwood, and Finn McCann, both age 23, used the last of their phones’ battery power to call and text their location to a friend in Shrewbury after becoming caught 3,500 meters up the Aiguille Noire de Peuterey peak near Mont Blanc. The two became stuck after Greenwood dislocated his shoulder and they were hit by strong winds and icy rain.

McCann said that they were very worried about hypothermia. Between the two of them, they only had two bars of power left in their cell phones. Thus, they were really starting to panic.

Reports show that Greenwood and McCann, who are both from Shrewbury, left their base camp in Italy at 6am on Wednesday. They were heading up the challenging south ridge route of the mountain using ropes. McCann went on to say that the weather started out very good for the first four hours. McCann has climbed in the Alps before, as well as the Himalayas and the Antarctic. He was training to be an expedition leader, so this climb should have proved to be no problem for him.

Mr McCann went on to say that things started to take a turn for the worst when Greenwood’s left shoulder kept becoming dislocated. This was due to an old weightlifting injury. McCann said that they were at about 3,000 meters when Tom’s shoulder continue to go back in then get dislocated. However, they chose to keep going and were going to sleep at the top and then return. However, once they hit about 3,500 meters, the weather started with icy rain and the cliff became like a waterfall. At that point they could not go up or back down.
