Now that the bank holiday has come and gone, the ABTA has estimated that some 1.8 million Brits left the country during the Bank Holiday that took place between August 27 – 30. Friday was seen as the busiest day overall. However, the whole weekend shows that many people wanted to get out of the house and enjoy a little bit of freedom.

Experts in the travel industry say that it is very easy to see why people were ready to leave the UK for this Bank Holiday. Many of these people have been stuck at home since the global recession hit. This has caused a lot of people to get cabin fever, and they are ready to get back into the swing of taking holidays again. Now that the economy is starting to pick back up, so will holidays.

Although official numbers have not yet been given out, people have been giving out estimates. In the southeast, over 420,000 people will have left from Heathrow. There will have been another 250,000 leaving from Gatwick and a further 136,000 more from Stansted. Even Luton will have had some 65,000 people going on a bank holiday this year.

On top of this, hundreds of thousands of people left by way of regional airports. This included 145,000 from Manchester and 25,000 from Leeds Bradford. Other reports say that Southampton saw some 12,000 people on holiday and Newcastle saw 36,000 people.

Experts have also said that beach destinations were the most popular this year. Some of the top destinations this year included Turkey, Egypt, the Greek islands, and even Spain. The United States also proved to be pretty popular. Many people chose to go to places like New York City and Orlando, Florida.
