Strikes in France to Disrupt Both Air and Rail

Anyone that is heading to France over the next few days should expect disruptions as workers prepare to take industrial action over proposed pension reforms. A strike started over this past weekend and now will last until early on Wednesday morning.

Air travel between the UK and France is very likely to be affected due to this trike. A number of rail services could also be delayed or even canceled as a result. British Airways has warned that flights to other destinations may also be affected. They have advised all passengers to check the status of their flights before traveling to the airport to depart.

All long-haul Air France services will operate, according to the airline. However about 90 percent of its short-haul flights from Charles de Gaulle airport and half of the short-haul flights from Orly airport will run.

Eurostar said that its services will operate as normal. However, it is giving passengers, who have already purchased tickets, the option of postponing their trips in case their connecting service is canceled. The Paris metro has said that its network will run at about 50 percent. Around half of high speed SNCF trains will be in service as well.

This strike, involving transport workers and spot office and civil service staff, is in direct response to the French Government’s proposals to increase the minimum retirement age from 60 to 62. Demonstrations are also planned in 137 towns and cities.

Of course, strikes have been seen all over Europe lately. It seems that travelers just cannot get away from all of these strikes no matter where they live.
