New Fight Breaks Out Between British Airways and Unite Union
Dave BondIt seems like the small bit of peace that had been found between British Airways and the Unite Union is now gone. In fact, the Unite union, which represents the airline’s cabin crew, is now saying that the airline is discriminating against pregnant workers.
The union goes on to say that British Airways is currently taking away pregnant workers’ pay if they live too far away from an airport. If they live within 50 miles, then the women are allowed to continue to work as a member of the carrier’s ground staff.
However, the airline has rejected these claims, which were made by the trade union. In fact, British Airways said that it makes every single effort to find alternative ways for pregnant workers to continue to work. The fact of the matter is, as soon as one of the cabin crew women become pregnant, they are immediately banned from flying. The airline does this in order to avoid the risk of any other kind of complications. A spokesman for the airline actually said that the airline has no intentions at all of denying basic pay to pregnant workers.
The union went on to say that British Airways has gone back on an agreement that is supposed to offer protection to workers who have found themselves unable to fly. In fact, up until last week, according to the union, women would continue to receive paid leave if they lived further than 50 miles from Heathrow and Gatwick. The staff members that live closer than that are, of course, expected to take up a job on the ground. Most of the time they are given roles that include running the check-in desks.
