British Airways Settles on Cargo Price-Fixing Lawsuit by Paying $89.5 Million
Abi BrayAccording to some new reports, British Airways has just recently agreed to pay some $89.5 million in order to settle its class action lawsuit in the United States. The company had this lawsuit brought on it after it was charged with cargo price-fixing.
For the people who don’t know, British Airways did plead guilty to being involved with the price fixing scheme back in 2006. The airline had already paid money to the European Commission and the Department of Justice for this crime.
Overall, however, it does not seem like British Airways is too upset with the money that it had to pay to put this case behind them. In fact, the company said that it was very “pleased” with the agreement that was finally made. Overall the deal was agreed on after an investigation was carried out by the United States Department of Justice.
Apparently this investigation took a look into the violation of anti-trust rules within the air transport industry. It was believed at the time that the violations took place between the years 2000 and 2006. It is very important to note that British Airways was just one of 11 airlines that were fined for taking part in this cartel.
In fact, a spokesperson for British Airways said that the airline was very pleased that it has now finally reached a settlement over these claims made by cargo customers in the United States. Hopefully the airline can move forward now and put all of these problems behind them.
However, the airline cannot move forward just yet. The settlement offer is still subject to approval in a New York court. Of course, experts did say that it is extremely unlikely that the settlement will be rejected.
