Fairmont Hotels Recycling Kitchen Oil

Abi Bray

As fuel prices remain a hot topic over the summer, Fairmont Hotels, who is a known leader in responsible travel, is happy to inject its own take on the topic. For Fairmont Hotels, their idea revolves around recycling kitchen oils rather than just simply discarding them like many other hotels do. Fairmont goes on to explain that food preparation requires the use of oils, which does create waste. This is something that is unavoidable in the hotel industry, so now Fairmont Hotels has come up with their own idea of what to do with the leftover cooking oil.

As part of the Fairmont Hotels focus on commitment to sustainability, more than 22 Fairmont hotel locations worldwide will be reducing their waste disposal and supporting the switch to a cleaner economy by manufacturing used kitchen oils into bio-diesel. This is a domestic and renewable fuel derived from natural oils.

Fairmont Hotels says that no one method is universal, and bio-diesel initiatives vary by property. However, at the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa, the hotel gets the job done by partnering up with Yokayo Bio Fuels, which is a local bio-diesel firm. Here they take approximately 150 gallons of kitchen grease each quarter and turn it into tallow or feed.

Other Fairmont Hotels will be participating in oil conversion efforts, but in their own way. This includes Fairmont San Francisco, Fairmont Royal York, Fairmont Southampton and many more.

Over almost two decades now, Fairmont Hotels has strived to minimize its impact on the planet. This is just yet another plan by Fairmont to make sure that they are doing all they can to help the planet.
