All Electric Private Hire Car Launched by Greentomatocars

Helen Young

A lot of people in London have already heard of the low-carbon private car hire company Greentomatocars. Well, apparently the company just announced that it is going to go even “greener.” This is because the firm is adding the very first fully electric vehicle to its fleet. Now travellers can reduce their carbon footprint to almost zero.

The private car hire company went on to say that it had taken delivery of two new Renault Fluence Z.E. electric cars. These two cars will be added to its ever-growing fleet of 200 hybrid and bio-fueled cars.

Overall, this is a big deal for the company because the delivery of the new electric car comes before it was even released to the UK market. However, soon others will have a chance to own their own private electric car. Either way, Greentomatocars said that this marks the very first fully electric vehicle to be used by a private car hire company in the UK.

Jonny Goldstone, who is the Greentomatocars co-founder, said that they are simply delighted to be taking delivery of the industry’s very first two EVs. The company already knows that their clients will be impressed by the performance of these cars. Overall, Greentomatocars has been very impressed with the credentials of these cars.

For those that do not know, the EV has a maximum speed of about 84 miles per hour. According to the manufacturer, the battery can take the car about 115 miles off one charge. When the car is released in the UK, it will sell for about £17,850 – including the £5000 Plug-in Car Government Grant.

Thanks for running this story. I just wanted to clarify – we are not a car hire or rental company, we are a “private hire” company.

    Confusing, I know.

In short, we are a quality minicab operator, but regulations prevent us describing ourselves as Cabs or Taxis, and insist on us being called Private Hire. (Why? Good question – cynics say it’s to protect a monopolistic anti-trust position for the Black Taxi trade; defenders of the distinction say it’s aimed at increasing safety for passengers. I’m probably not the most impartial person to comment though…!)

We appreciate this causes confusion – but we’d hate for your readers to think they can rent cars from us. They can’t, but they can book us to take them from A to B (or C or D).

We’re also Heathrow Airport’s preferred “private hire” operator, and you can book our service on line to collect from the airport.

I hope this helps but please let me know if you want anything further.

    Best regards
    Jonny
