Good news for American travel industry in general, as Southwest Airlines is planning bump up its spring service across the country. The carrier announced yesterday that it plans to add new flights within the United States as soon as March 2010. Although this is very positive news, Southwest Airlines is very quick to indicate that despite the new connections the company is still struggling to get reacquainted with growth mode.

The new flights will come into schedule between March 14 and May 7 and are already available for booking.

Southwest Airlines has also indicated some US airports will witness a substantial increase in their service such Chicago Midway Airport which is schedule to get 21 extra daily flights, as well as Baltimore Airport with get 18 more flights a day. Other airports, such as in Orlando and Tampa will get 9 more flights each per day.

Southwest Airlines also said that it will increase its non-stop service between Boston’s Logan Airport and Baltimore’s BWI in August. The carrier said it was going to add two weekday flights, bringing its total to seven.

Overall, the American carrier will be increasing its daily service in the US by 62 round trip flights as well as cutting 10 round trip flights for a net gain of 52 per day. Southwest Airlines’ upgraded March schedule reflects seasonal travel trends as demand typically increases during the spring.

The Dallas-based airline explains that it is capable to provide all of these flights with its current fleet and does not need to add any aircraft. The extra availability comes from seasonal fluctuations which reduces demand on certain longer flights thus freeing some planes.
