Shanghai airport gets new Boeing facility

Boeing has recently inaugurated the opening of a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility at Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport as planned even if the aviation market is still sluggish, it’s been reported Friday.

The large hangar, with the capacity to accommodate two B747 aircrafts, is also Pudong’s first MRO facility. It’s operated as joint venture under the management of Boeing Shanghai Aviation Services Company. The American airplane manufacturer possesses a 60-percent stake, and Shanghai Airport Authority and Shanghai Airlines have a 25-percent and 15-percent stake respectively.

The launch of this hangar marks the first opportunity for Boeing to take a controlling share in a joint venture MRO. The project is also the first foreign-controlled MRO facility in China.

The partnership was started in 2006 and previously leased a similar facility from Shanghai Airlines in order to carry out heavy maintenance line maintenance check services.

The facility currently offers an MRO service to B737 aircrafts and is planning to expand its services to twin-aisle planes. Further important jobs are to modify B767 passenger planes into freighters. But the airline declined to reveal its timeline for the conversion project.

Shanghai Airport Authority executive vice-president Li Derun said that the new maintenance facility will improve Pudong’s standing in service during the World Expo which is scheduled for next year in Shanghai.
