Delta schedules Detroit to Seoul and Hong Kong

Delta Air Lines Inc, now the largest commercial passenger airline in the world due to its merger with Northwest Airlines last year, is set to launch direct, nonstop service from Detroit to Seoul and Hong Kong in 2010.

Delta will offer five flights per week originating in Detroit for the two key Asian cities, with a June debut. The U.S. airline will provide the service using the state of the art Boeing 777-200 aircraft.

At the same time, Delta’s number of flights between Detroit and Shanghai will rise from the current five to seven per week.

Delta’s Kent Landers said the increased fleet flexibility accessed through the Northwest merger gives the carrier the opportunity to offer the new Asian routes, adding that Detroit now finds itself in a good position for connections between North America and Asia.

The nonstop Detroit to Hong Kong flight will last 15 hours and 45 minutes, while the flight to Seoul will be 13 hours and 50 minutes.

Initial prices for the flights are quiet reasonable. June return fares will run at $1,461 to Seoul and $1,610 to Hong Kong.

With the addition of these new flights, Delta demonstrates its faith in Detroit International Airport as the company is planning to keep the facility as a busy international hub.
