The well known budget hotel chain Travelodge has just announced that it has had to cut 15 staff from its head office located in Thame. This announcement comes around the same time the company announced the opening of seven new hotels.

A spokesperson for Travelodge, Shakila Ahmed, went on to confirm that 15 people had been let go from the headquarters. He also announced that there had been four regional job cuts as well. When asked why the redundancies came at the same time as the big expansion, the spokesperson said the new hotels are being opened across the UK, but the cost cutting exercise is at the head office. This is a review that had to be done so the chain can keep costs down.

The new hotels that are opening in Newquay, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Norwich, Bournemouth, Farnborough, and Macclesfiled are expected to create 150 new jobs. These hotels represent an investment that is said to have cost almost £22 million.

Travelodge has just recently cut its prices from £29 to £19 a night in a fight for market share with Holiday Inn Express and Premier Inn. The company did note that it was aiming to recruit all of its new staff for for new hotels from the unemployed.

Grant Hearn, the Travelodge chief executive, said that despite a very tough year for the hotel market as a whole, the company has continued to grow and offer more opportunities nationwide. The company’s success in recruiting from the long term unemployed is something that they are very proud of and will continue to do.
