Many Britons Travel Uninsured

Sainsbury’s Finance has revealed that more than a third of British travellers, or 11.3m people, have had no insurance during their recent summer holidays.

Because of recessionary conditions, cutting back on travel insurance may appear to be a reasonable sacrifice. However, the Sainsbury study reveals that UK travellers would rather have uninsured holidays then none at all.

But vacationing without the protection of an insurance policy could prove to be an expensive move. Sainsbury’s Finance has claimed that uncovered holidaymakers have had to deal with in excess of £57m in costs that would ordinarily have been paid by their insurance company.

According to Sainsbury’s Finance travel insurance manager Sam Marrs, purchasing holiday insurance should be seen as a travel essential. Marrs said that the fact that several people feel they can avoid the need for travel insurance is very worrying.

The research revealed that Britons under the age of 34 represented the group which ruled out the most buying insurance coverage.

Furthermore, an estimated 43% (1.9m) of British travellers aged between 25 and 34 had no intention of purchasing travel insurance. While 18% of the people in that age group said it was not necessary, another 17% said coverage was unaffordable to them.

According to Moneysupermarket.com, travel insurance is less expensive than some people might believe. The company gave the example of a single trip to Europe, for which insurance might be purchased for as low as £5.82. A trip to the US could be insured for as little as £10.05 and an annual worldwide policy could go for as little as £24.26.

Moneysupermarket.com travel insurance manager Maxine Baker said customers often see travel coverage as an expensive add-on to their vacation plans and this may be a contributing factor why so many vacationers opt out of it.
