Hilton UK Goes Green
Tiffany PhillipsThe UK division of Hilton Worldwide is the first hotel firm to receive the Carbon Trust Standard award for alleviating its emissions of carbon dioxide.
In 2005, the hotel giant associated itself with the Carbon Trust and introduced initiatives which contributed to improve the energy efficiency in its hotels resulting in a diminution of 15% in emissions.
Hilton energy-saving measures carried out included upgrading its lights, combining power and heat devices to generate electricity on site, audits of thermal insulation systems performed regularly, introducing of a sustainability reporting system and seeing that all the hotel’s equipment is functioning as efficiently as possible.
Also, Hilton Worldwide has been encouraging its employees to identify ‘energy champions’ at each of its locations as a means to promote sustainability as well as introducing a green incentive programme.
The hotel company has set a goal which would result in a 20% reduction of its carbon dioxide emissions by 2014.
According to Harry Morrison, the general manager of Carbon Trust Standard, by bringing down its carbon emissions Hilton Worldwide will eventually improve the efficiency of its business. The Carbon Trust Standard benefits from being a very credible mark of excellence which informs other businesses and the hotel’s customer base about the good work it has performed in regards to lowering its carbon footprint and its environmental impact.
Hilton Worldwide, which was formerly called the Hilton Hotels Corporation, is active in 77 countries and operates 3,200 hotels with 545,000 rooms worldwide.
According to Forbes magazine, Hilton was ranked the 43rd largest private company in America in January 2009.
