Growing Popularity Of Mobile Travel Applications

The use of mobile devices for check in, flight notification and seat selection is increasingly popular amongst travellers both young and old.

It’s been said that they are willing to accept advertising which comes along the free travel applications. A recent global mobile poll of travellers conducted by Sabre Travel Network revealed these figures.

About 800 leisure and business travellers from Europe, Latin America, Asia-Pacific and North America answered questions covering subjects such as preferred software features and fees for the travel applications.

Most travellers who participated in the survey owned a smart phone, with 69% of them answering affirmatively, with North American travellers topping the list with 78% and APAC travellers at the bottom, with a rate of 46%.

The survey revealed that the most popular usage for the application was for checking email, at 63%, and surfing the internet coming in second place, at 49%.

Half of the surveyed travellers were 40 years of age or older, indicating that the popularity of mobile services is spread all across the adult generations and that it being predominately a teen or twenty-something gadget is simply a myth.

The Sabre Travel Network survey also revealed a large degree of interest in the services the company is offering as well as the ones offered through other travel technology providers.

Europeans topped North American and APAC travellers in interest of certain features. The poll showed that 71% of the Europeans surveyed demonstrated an interest in using a mobile device to verify and look for flights, compared to 64% in North America. Fifty-five percent of Europeans said they would use their devices to track their luggage, with North Americans agreeing at 45%.

Sabre recently launched TripCase (SM), a mobile software available for both Blackberry and iPhone users.

The application received accolades from software experts; it got a nomination from PhoCusWright for the “Innovator of the Year” as well as being named “Best Travel App” by Business Week.
