Airplane Vapor Trails Block Sunshine Over Britain

Robert Jones

It now seems that the vapor trails that are left behind from jet aircrafts over Britain can cause clouds covering almost 20,000 square miles. This new information came in from the Met Office research. This means that these vapor trails are actually reducing sunshine in the UK by 10 percent. This is bad news for people who like to travel for the holidays by way of planes.

Analysis found out that the contrails from just one large military aircraft circling over the North Sea showed the creation of a thin layer of clouds. At its peak, it covered an area of more than 20,000 square miles.

The Met Office research went on to suggest that the collective impact of hundreds of these vapor trails, caused by commercial jets, can cause a blanket of thin clouds. This would actually reduce sunshine for millions who live under busy flight paths. Some people who live near such paths said that they have noticed these kinds of effects for quite some time now.

Contrails, which are clouds of condensed water vapor and soot particles that are made by the exhaust of jet engines, sometimes disperse within minutes. However, some of them can be present in the sky for many hours after the jet is gone. Thus, areas that see many jets go by could start to see the build up of these vapors.

Around the globe, vapor trails are thought to cut sunshine levels by less than one percent. However, these new figures now show that areas with busy air routes could see a reduction in sunlight as much as 10 percent.
