Orion Expeditions Waits For New Ship

Sharon Miller

Australian based cruise ship company Orion Expeditions has announced that it’s planning to double its capacity in 2011 as it will take delivery of a second vessel that will be anchored and will operate in the Far East.

The vessel, with a capacity of 100 passengers, will be chartered from Travel Dynamics International, an American expedition cruise company based in New York.

This particular vessel is a sister ship to the formerly named Hebridean Spirit. It’s presently called Clelia II, but is scheduled to be renamed Orion II when it will be introduced to the Orion fleet in May 2011.

Clelia II has recently benefited from refurbishments totaling €13 million although further cosmetic enhancements are set to be carried out on the ship to bring it into line with the Orion style before entering activity with the Australian cruise company.

Once under Orion Expeditions, Orion II will be anchored in Southeast Asia and will provide sailing opportunities to a variety of expedition cruises in popular travel destinations such as Cambodia, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesian.

The ship is also fitted with an ice-strengthened hull allowing sailing in icy conditions experienced in Antarctica.

Orion Expeditions currently operates one ship, the Orion which is capable of handling 106 passengers and sails in Papua New Guinea, Melanesia, Kimberley and Antarctica
