Birmingham International Airport has benefited from an important boost following the warning by an inquiry that regional airports must be linked to a planned high speed rail network in Britain.

The Commons Transport Committee stated that it was imperative that high speed trains, running at up to 225mph, had stops at key airports outside the capital.

Birmingham Airport has been asking to be directly connected with the planned high speed line, and now boast the backing of regional development agency Advantage West Midlands and Birmingham City Council.

But a decision on the route is yet to be made for the new service. The line may instead simply head directly towards Birmingham city centre, and completely bypassing the airport.

After a lengthy inquiry into the Britain’s aviation industry, MPs have backed the idea of running high speed trains to the country’s major airports.

They had claimed to be looking forward to the development of a high-speed rail network in the UK, adding that it was imperative to include major airports on the rail grid.

They said that high-speed rail will be seen as an alternative to several domestic flights, which represents a welcome option for travellers and strengthens the country’s top air transport facilities.

A company called High Speed Two has been set by the UK Government in order to design a detailed route for the planned high speed train. The route will at first run between London and Birmingham. Ministers have revealed that the service would be gradually expanded to connect other cities in the future.
