Melbourne Welcomes Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways has initiated service to Melbourne thus linking Doha with a new part of the world for the Middle Eastern Carrier. The airline adds a new destination to its rapidly growing international network.

Melbourne is now Qatar Airways’ 85th city and also its fourth new air connection this year. In 2009, the carrier also launched routes to Houston in Texas and to the Indian cities of Goa and Amritsar.

The award-winning carrier is also scheduling a Sydney start sometime next year.

Akbar Al Baker, Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Airways was on board the maiden flight and as leading a group of high-profile representatives.

 He was accompanied by the Australian Ambassador to the UAE and Qatar, His Excellency Doug Trappett, as well as international journalists and senior Qatar Airways executives.

Qatar Airways is using its newest equipment for the Doha to Melbourne route: a state of the art Boeing 777-200LR shipped only a month ago. The 777-200 Long Range aircraft has 217 in Economy class and 42 seats in Business.

The frequency for the new route starts with three flights per week set for Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The Minister of Tourism and Major Events, Tim Holding, officially greeted Qatar Airways during a joint press conference at the State Government Offices in Melbourne.

At the moment, Qatar Airways already flies to key leisure and business world destinations from Doha, including direct flights to Europe, Middle East, Africa, South Asia, Far East, North America and now Australia.

Since its 1997 debut, Qatar Airways has developed into one of world’s fastest growing airlines.
