EasyJet Announces the Cancellation of East Midlands Airport Flights

The well known budget airline easyJet has just recently announced that it plans on making some new cuts to its services. This time the cuts will involve the airline pulling out of one airport and reducing its capacity at another by 20 percent.

Easyjet confirmed that, after a 90 day consultation, with its staff, it will be closing its base at East Midlands Airport and cutting capacity at its home base at London Luton Airport by 20 percent. On January 5th, the airline will stop all of its operations at East Midlands Airport.

The 107 cabin crew and pilots who requested to transfer to other easyJet bases will be accommodated. An easyJet spokesperson said that passengers booked on travel after January 5th will be emailed over the next few days and offered either a free transfer to another easyJet flight or a free transfer to a bmibaby flight. The passengers will also have a choice for a full refund.

The spokesperson said that easyJet plans to move the capacity to more profitable airports. The airline is still committed to an overall growth plan of 7.5 percent per year over the medium term.

The spokesperson also confirmed that the carrier will be reducing its capacity at its base at London Luton Airport by 20 percent. He said that this follows airport operator Abertis and Luton Borough Council’s failure to recognize the commercial realities of the recession and address rising airport costs. Due to the rises at the airport, the airport is no longer competitive, so easyJet will be taking 20 percent of their business elsewhere.
